Privacy Policy for FocusLight
Last updated: June 7, 2026
Overview
FocusLight is a Chrome extension that helps you focus while reading. When enabled, it highlights the element your cursor is hovering over (such as an image, post, or card) and gently dims the rest of the page. This policy explains what data the extension does and does not handle.
Data We Collect
FocusLight does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personal data.
We do not collect personally identifiable information, health information, financial information, authentication information, personal communications, location, web history, or website content. We do not track your activity, and we do not use analytics or any third-party tracking services.
How the Extension Works
FocusLight runs entirely on your device, inside your browser. To draw its highlight-and-dim overlay, the extension reads the on-screen position and size of the element under your cursor. This information is used only momentarily to render the visual effect — it is never stored, logged, or sent anywhere.
The extension makes no network requests and contains no remote code. All of its code is included in the extension package.
Settings Storage
Your preferences — whether the spotlight is on or off, the highlight brightness, the surround darkness, and the section padding — are saved using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.sync feature. This data is stored only in your own browser and, if you are signed into Chrome, synced across your own devices through your Google account. It contains no personal or browsing information, and it is never accessible to us or to any third party.
Permissions
- Storage: used only to save your extension settings, as described above.
- Host access (all sites): required so the visual overlay can work on any page you choose to read. The extension only reads the layout position of the hovered element to render the effect; it does not read, collect, or transmit page content.
Third-Party Sharing
We do not share, sell, or transfer any user data to third parties, because we do not collect any user data.
Children's Privacy
FocusLight does not collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes to This Policy
